Celebrating Kindness Week at Skoi-Yase Primary School

Kindness is more than a word or a single action; it’s something that can be incorporated into everything we do. The week of Feb. 24-28, the staff and students at Skoi-Yase Primary School explored the many ways we can express kindness as part of Kindness Week.

“We started recognizing Kindness Week last year, to coincide with Random Acts of Kindness Day,” said Jada Bryant, a counselor at Skoi-Yase. “The kids love having the chance to dress up and have fun.”

Each day students and staff were given a theme, such as orange and black, tie-dye, or their favorite sports jersey. School administrators and community members also treated the students to guest readings of books like “Doug the Pug and the Kindness Crew.”

Readers included Superintendent Sarah Cupelli, Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction Christine Taylor, and more. The student’s favorite guest was Nala the Therapy Dog, who spread animal kindness to multiple classrooms.

Story Walk Installed At Skoi-Yase

Skoi-Yase Primary School recently installed a story walk around the garden by the outdoor learning classroom. The story walk begins at the entrance by the picnic tables and continues clockwise. The current book selection is “How Did That Get in My Lunchbox?”

The story walk materials and first book were created by the Seneca County Creating Healthy School and Communities (CHSC) Project Director Sara Flack.

Story walks are an excellent way to support both physical activity and literacy for elementary students on school grounds and throughout the community. Story walks are portable, temporary installations that can be moved and updated with new books. Story walks can also be left outside in all types of weather.

Teachers can utilize the walks as an active stretch break, during recess, or to enhance lessons by developing discussion questions to go along with the book or activities following the reading. The story walks are also available for students and their families to visit outside of normal school hours.
